Art ENCOUNTERS is an exhibition series presented by SHIKISAISHA.
For its fourth edition, we are pleased to introduce the works of Kenji Shimizu.
Shimizu’s works feature traditional Japanese motifs such as cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji. However, what stands out most uniquely is his original character, Bridly, which he created based on a rusty bird toy he discovered at an antique shop. With its wind-up mechanism that flaps its wings, Bridly evokes the passage of time and memory, appearing in his works as a symbol of time. Despite its charming form, Bridly sometimes takes the shape of a mystical creature, resembling the phoenix from ancient Chinese mythology or Yatagarasu, the three-legged crow from Japanese legends. Within this world, Shimizu expresses the fleeting, yet beautiful and powerful nature of life as it fades away. This exhibition showcases Kenji Shimizu’s artistic universe, where classical and contemporary elements, as well as Eastern and Western influences, seamlessly blend through diverse techniques. 四季彩舎が提案する展覧会シリーズ Art ENCOUNTERS。
第4回となる本展では、志水堅二の作品を紹介します。
志水の作品には、日本画の伝統的なモチーフである桜や富士山が登場しますが、その中で独自の存在感を放つのが、彼が生み出したオリジナルキャラクター「ブリドリー」です。アンティークショップで出会った錆びた鳥のおもちゃから着想を得たブリドリーは、ゼンマイ仕掛けで羽を動かす姿が時の流れや記憶を想起させ、「時間の象徴」として作品の中に描かれます。
可愛らしいフォルムを持ちながらも、時には古代中国の瑞鳥・鳳凰に、またある時は日本神話の八咫烏に姿を変え、神秘的な存在として画面に現れるブリドリー。その世界観には、朽ちゆく命の儚さ、美しさ、そして力強さが込められています。
本展では、古典と現代、西洋と東洋の要素を融合させ、多彩な技法で描かれる志水堅二の作品世界をご紹介します。ぜひご高覧ください。
Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated by Japan’s character culture, which led me to transform an antique rusty bird toy into an original character, Bridly. Through this character, I seek to express the ephemeral, beautiful, and powerful nature of life as it decays over time.
With a background in oil painting, Japanese painting, and design, I employ various materials and techniques to create my works. By merging classical and contemporary elements, as well as Eastern and Western influences, I explore themes of time, memory, and existence within my art.

日本文化の特徴の一つである「キャラクター文化」に興味を持ち、アンティークショップで出会った錆びた鳥のおもちゃをキャラクター化し、オリジナルキャラクター「ブリドリー」を考案しました。私はこのキャラクターを通じて、朽ちていく命の儚さ、美しさ、そして力強さを表現しています。
大学では油画・日本画・デザインを学び、多彩な材料や技法を駆使して制作を行っています。古典と現代、西洋と東洋が融合する独特の世界観を構築し、作品の中で時間や記憶、そして存在の意味を探求しています。
